# How to set up Shopify abandoned checkout emails

ShopMail can remind subscribed shoppers who leave a checkout. An abandoned checkout is different from an anonymous cart: the app needs an eligible checkout and customer information to send an email.

## Check consent and other reminders

ShopMail treats checkout reminders as marketing and requires subscribed email consent. Check Shopify and other installed apps for existing recovery emails to avoid an overlapping customer experience. No email setup guarantees recovered sales.

## Configure and test the reminder

Defaults are one hour for the first reminder and one day for an optional follow-up. Review your actual settings before enabling.

1. Open the Abandoned checkout automation.
2. Check the first reminder’s timing, subject and checkout link.
3. Choose whether to enable the second reminder or add a discount.
4. Preview and send yourself a test email.
5. Use a test checkout and an address you control to check the flow.
6. Complete the test order and confirm reminders stop for that checkout.

## Evaluate the customer experience

Keep the reminder helpful and accurate. Review sending health, clicks and attributed orders. A small store may have too few eligible abandoned checkouts to draw strong conclusions quickly.
